Dr. Jim’s formidable reputation underpinned the initial success of his economic research firm, Asianomics Group, based in Hong Kong. Before he founded Asianomics Group over a decade ago, Dr. Jim worked for 16 years as Chief Economist at the investment group, CLSA.
Dr. Jim has won many prestigious awards and the respect of the investment industry for his forecasts of the Asian Crisis in 1997 and the 2007 downturn in the US.
Dr. Jim is an original thinker, and as an Austrian Economist, he does not follow the consensus view. In his investment newsletter, Wealthy Nations, Dr. Jim’s wisdom of the region comes across in his own inimitable style, witty and pithy. Investors rely on his prescient analysis to be educated on Asia, and to stay cognizant of the region’s threats and many opportunities.
In the last few years Dr. Jim developed an approach to analyzing economies, primarily in the Asian region, based on profit and credit cycles. Application of this approach allowed him to call early the upswing in the Indian stock market in the final quarter of 2013.
Before coming to Asia, Dr. Jim worked as a research fellow at the Fraser of Allander Institute for Research, and then at The Royal Bank of Scotland’s Edinburgh headquarters. At the latter he covered the Scottish and US economies for the bank as well as the oil industry. Between 1998 and 2002 he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree and a doctorate in economics from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
